Community Legacy Tourism

Since 2008, we have offered opportunities for high school and university students to visit communities in Ecuador as agents of transformation. In 2013, the Beyond Chacay Foundation was a created to launch our EcoHelix initiative. We are now offering programs for high school and university students, families and retirees to participate in community legacy tourism.

OUR METHOD

CAPACITY BUILDING

During the remaining five years of this decade, we intend to concentrate our activities in Capacity Building in
recruiting, training and enabling young entrepreneurs in communities in the Amazon, the Andes, the Coast
and Galapagos, using the Flourishing Business Canvas model (www.flourishingbusiness.org) as a guide
that incorporates environmental and social consideration into the traditional business canvas approach.

Building on our success on the Galapagos with our GRECO initiative, we will develop online content that
will focus on ten pilot communities,  with the EcoHelix model as a guide. Our inputs include training
and the outputs, outcomes and impact will depend on the creation of local dynamic business ecosystems;
training programs that bridge the digital divide and promote innovation and entrepreneurship; and an overall
emphasis on promoting circular economies with tourists providing sustainability to the initiative. in addition
to schools and universities, key stakeholders and partners include the Ministries of Tourism, Telecommunications,
Education as well nonprofits and existing business committed to economic and environmental sustainability.

Target communities will include Tena and Puyo in the Amazon;  Quito and Cuenca in the Sierra; Puerto Lopez
and Canoa in the Coast; and the three major populated islands of the Galapagos: San Cristobal, Santa Cruz
and Isabela, with resources invested in content development using AI to create a contextualized curriculum.

GRECO INTRANET INITIATIVE

The Galápagos Community Educational Network (GRECO) is a visionary project that successfully connected the 24 educational institutions across the 4 populated islands of the Galápagos Archipelago through an advanced intranet.

BCF, in partnership with Villanova University, IEEE, and The Internet Society, raised $250,000. The GRECO, which took three years to complete, became the backbone during the COVID-19 pandemic of a two-year teacher training initiative coordinated by the Galapagos Conservancy.

The GRECO network connected the educational centers of the islands during a time when access to the Internet was limited. This project has been crucial in improving communication and resource sharing among the institutions of Galápagos, significantly contributing to strengthening education in the islands and overcoming connectivity barriers in the region.

One of the great opportunities that GRECO will realize in 2025 is to support the implementation of The Galapagos Plan 2030.

Investing in Infrastructure

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Our work on the Galápagos since our launch in 2013 has relied significantly on the role and contributions of ElecGalápagos, the Public Utility Company that depends on oil transported to the islands from the mainland.

In 2001, the Jessica, an oil tanker, was involved in a catastrophic oil spill on the islands. On the night of 13 January 2001, the Jessica ran aground in Shipwreck Bay, at the entrance to the port of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The ship was carrying 600 tonnes (160,000 gallons) of diesel fuel and 300 tonnes (80,000 gallons) of intermediate fuel oil. The environmental impact was enormous.

In the past two and a half decades, both aeolic (wind) and solar solutions have become a priority. In collaboration with ElecGalápagos and FUNCAVID, our local partners, we will be launching a campaign inviting residents to collaborate in reducing consumption. This initiative will be conducted through an Innovation and Community Outreach Center on Santa Cruz Island, which has a population of 28,000 residents.
