Proyecto GRECO – Beyond Chacay Foundation

Bring Internet to the Schools of the Galápagos Islands

Galápagos Community Educational Network

Together, we can install Starlink antennas and connect over 3,000 students on the most remote islands.

A Visionary Project

for the Islands’ Future

The Galápagos Community Educational Network (GRECO) successfully connected 24 educational institutions across the four populated islands of the archipelago through an advanced intranet.

Key Achievements:
In collaboration with Villanova University, IEEE, and The Internet Society, GRECO raised $250,000 and was completed in three years.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, GRECO became the backbone of a two-year teacher training initiative led by the Galápagos Conservancy.
It enhanced communication and resource sharing among schools, breaking down connectivity barriers in the region.

Impactful Fact:
24 schools are already connected through GRECO. Now, it’s time to take the next step.

THE GRECO

Vision for the Future

With your help, we’ll install Starlink antennas at strategic points across the islands to connect GRECO’s intranet to the internet and distribute free access to schools and vulnerable communities.

How It Works:
Install 3 corporate Starlink antennas on Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, and Isabela.
Link these antennas to the operational GRECO intranet.
Distribute free internet via strategically placed WiFi hotspots to benefit students and nearby communities.

Expected Impact:
Internet access for over 3,000 students and their families.
Unprecedented educational and social opportunities.
Bridging the digital divide in one of the world’s most unique regions.

OUR PROJECT

GRECO INTRANET INITIATIVE

The Galápagos Community Educational Network (GRECO) is a visionary project that successfully connected the 24 educational institutions across the 4 populated islands of the Galápagos Archipelago through an advanced intranet.

BCF, in partnership with Villanova University, IEEE, and The Internet Society, raised $250,000. The GRECO, which took three years to complete, became the backbone during the COVID-19 pandemic of a two-year teacher training initiative coordinated by the Galapagos Conservancy.

The GRECO network connected the educational centers of the islands during a time when access to the Internet was limited. This project has been crucial in improving communication and resource sharing among the institutions of Galápagos, significantly contributing to strengthening education in the islands and overcoming connectivity barriers in the region.

One of the great opportunities that GRECO will realize in 2025 is to support the implementation of The Galapagos Plan 2030.
